This August 2024 I was awarded the Award for Persistent Involvement in Community And Leadership (APICAL) from the UPenn Neuroscience Graduate Group’s Graduate Led Initiatives and Activities (GLIA) community. Humbled, I gave a speech, hoping to touch and inspire the graduate students at the beginning and end of their PhD journey. This is the speech I gave.

I learned that I was awarded the 2020 Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Graduate Fellowship grant. News of the award both revived and resolved some complex emotions.

Here is the story of my 1st year in grad school training to get a PhD - my path toward understanding machine learning from scratch and what I considered as I was choosing a lab.
